How Is CBD Isolate Made?

What Factors Affect Highness and High Time?

Whether you choose to smoke, vape, or consume edibles to get high, it’s always better to know what to expect.

Part of what makes the experience enjoyable is knowing just how hard the effects of THC will hit you–and how long they will last. 

First and foremost, if you’re looking for “how long does a weed high last” because you’re desperate for it to end, take heart. No high lasts long, and you’ll most likely be back to normal after an hour or so.

Every person is unique, and the duration of a cannabis high is determined by a multitude of factors. The duration of your high is generally determined by how you react to cannabis, the type of cannabis consumed, and the manner utilized to consume it.

Here is a breakdown of what influences how hard a high will hit you and how long it will last.

The “Highness Equation”

Cannabis highs can begin almost instantaneously, or take up to an hour to take effect. The length of time it takes for a high to begin depends on your specific body’s reaction, but it is also directly related to how you consumed it.

A more-or-less scientific method of “calculating” how long your cannabis high will last is known as the “highness equation.”

The highness equation takes into account the four primary factors that influence how long your marijuana high will endure. Here’s what it is:

((dose x concentration) / (metabolism x tolerance)) x delivery method = Length of High

In essence, how much weed you put in your body is divided by how your body processes and responds to it, all of which is influenced by the exact path the weed takes through your system.

It seems complex, but it’s not, really–and it also isn’t a perfect formula. However, it can guide you in getting a “ballpark” idea of how long your high will last.

The Delivery Method

The delivery method used to consume THC will influence how high you get–and how long you feel the effects.

Dabbing 

Onset of high: Nearly instantaneous

Dabs are sticky cannabis oils prepared by extracting the THC and other active elements of cannabis into a powerful wax, shatter, or oil. The extract is burned to extremely high temperatures (often with a blowtorch), and the resulting vapor is ingested through a specially designed dab rig. People that dab their cannabis will most likely experience the effects of a weed high the fastest, with the high setting in practically instantly due to the high concentration of THC.

A weed high from a dab might last much longer than a weed high from smoking pot.

Still, everything is relative. Dabs typically attract seasoned cannabis consumers with a taste for potency and, as a result, a higher tolerance to THC. Some cannabis users choose to vaporize their cannabis rather than employ these methods, which rely on combusting cannabis. Weed can be vaporized as a flower, wax, or oil, and a number of devices, ranging from handheld pens to massive machines, can be employed. People who smoke or vape cannabis will have a somewhat delayed reaction, but the effects will normally be felt between 2 and 10 minutes after smoking or vaping.

Your body is also in the business of metabolizing what you put into it, breaking it down, absorbing what it needs, and excreting the remainder. As a result, if you have a fast metabolism, your highs will be shorter. Or, at the very least, your body is laboring against the clock.

However, there is also drug metabolism to contend with. The term “drug metabolism” refers to the biotransformation of pharmaceutical drugs in the body so that they can be removed more easily. Because the enzymes that assist the reactions are concentrated in the liver, the majority of drug-related metabolic activities take place there.

The rate of medication metabolism varies widely across individuals. This has an impact on the drug’s efficacy and toxicity in people with extremely high or low metabolism rates.

Rapid metabolizers, for example, remove the drug fast, and the therapeutic concentration of the drug in the blood and tissues may not be attained–meaning the high will be less intense and fade quickly. In certain patients, the medicine is digested so slowly that it builds up in the bloodstream. The higher the concentration of the substance in the body, the greater the possibility of unwanted effects…and the stronger (and longer-lasting) the high will be.

Many factors contribute to the intensity of your high and its duration. Effects can typically range from 2 to 10 hours. The length of a high is determined by a variety of factors, including:

  • How much cannabis did you consume or inhale?
  • How much THC was in the cannabis that was consumed or inhaled?
  • Your body mass index (BMI) and body fat %
  • Regardless of whether you have a sluggish or fast metabolism
  • Whether you’ve eaten or not
  • Your personal tolerance level
  • The delivery method

How To Read A Certificate Of Analysis

With the slow but steady legalization of cannabis products across the United States and the world, the cannabis industry is gradually growing with it. This brings along a whole new set of rules, regulations, and guidelines that need to be followed in order for cannabis businesses to remain compliant. 

One such guideline that businesses in the cannabis market have to adhere to is providing purchasers of their cannabis products with a certificate of analysis (COA) for that product. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, there is an emerging trend of cannabis products being mislabelled as to their cannabinoid potency, or that are failing to disclose the presence of certain cannabinoids (such as THC) in their products.

What Is A Certificate Of Analysis?

A Certificate Of Analysis is obtained from an accredited laboratory and is a verified report of the chemical analysis of the cannabis product (namely the potency of the cannabinoids, such as CBD and THC) along with particulars of the testing lab, the brand, and the product at hand. Furthermore, the COA will tell consumers if the product contains any damaging toxins like heavy metals, pesticides, molds, or bacteria. Many cannabis consumers do not like the idea of purchasing a product whose chemical analysis was tested by the manufacturer themselves, due to unfair bias. There is a multitude of impartial, third-party organizations that offer accredited CBD testing services that cannabis businesses can utilize. 

How To Read A COA 

Understanding the data within each section of the COA is crucial, most accredited lab reports follow the same general format, so once you have an understanding you’ll be good to go. The heading is also important as it contains information that verifies the legitimacy of the certificate. 

  • Cannabinoid Types 

 The hemp plant contains a wide range of cannabinoid chemicals. 

A full-spectrum certificate of analysis should compile all detectable cannabinoids, including but not limited to CBD, THC, CBN, CBDV, and CBG if it’s full-spectrum CBD oil that you’re selling. THC, the cannabinoid you don’t want if your product isn’t identified and legally sold as cannabis — at least not in quantities that exceed 0.3% weight — will also fall into this section. 

You might see the initials ND, or non-detectable, next to some of the compounds as you skim down the list. This means that there was so little of the compound detected for it to be negligible. 

  • Weight Percentage

Weight percentage is the percentage by weight of each cannabis compound, located to the right of the cannabinoid types. Additionally, the weight of the product should not include the weight of the packaging. 

  • Concentration

The following column will be a report on the concentration of each cannabinoid compound which will be measured in milligrams per gram (mg/g). This section allows you to verify that the cannabinoid levels of the product match what you paid for (especially with CBD oils). If you purchased a product that weighs 50 grams and contains 500 milligrams of CBD then it should say 10mg/g in this section. 

  • Safety Profile

Like all commercial products, cannabis products should be screened for possible harmful chemicals, such as pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, microbes, mycotoxins, foreign matter, etc.

The heavy metal analysis section of the COA should list the total amount of metals detected in the product, along with the maximum amount of each metal that is considered “safe” for human consumption. The detected amount should be well below that of the maximum safe amount. 

The microbial contamination section of the safety profile will tell us that no fungi or bacteria are present in the product. These results will be in cfu/g (colony forming unit per gram) on the COA. Negative reports will sit at <10 cfu/g. 

  • Terpenes 

 Not all companies test for terpenes in their products. Terpenes give the cannabis plant its unique scent while safeguarding the plant. Should they be tested it will be measured in ppm (parts per million). 

  • Other

Fatty acids and Vitamin E may also be tested and listed on the COA as these are naturally present in the cannabis plant.

Flash Chromatography And Other Techniques In Cannabis Extract Purification

Did you know that the extraction of cannabis dates back to Medieval Egypt? The cannabinoid compounds found in cannabis have long been used for both medicinal and recreational purposes. In recent years, with the slow legalization of cannabis in different countries and states, it has become more important than ever to be able to extract, purify, and quantize cannabis compounds.

Cannabis extract purification is essential to the process of producing safe, high-grade, consistent cannabis products: so let’s unpack cannabis extract purification methods, such as flash chromatography. 

Flash Chromatography

When we talk about flash chromatography, we are referencing a chemical separation method used to purify chemical compounds in cannabis, specifically cannabinoids. Flash chromatography makes use of air pressure for rapid separation, generally using a pump, a column, solvent, a UV (ultraviolet) detector for detecting the cannabinoids, and a fraction collector for collecting those cannabinoids which are detected. 

There can be more than one hundred cannabinoids detected in cannabis, many of which have very similar compound structures, making the separation of compounds difficult due to their lower resolution. This is why flash chromatography is especially useful when purifying cannabis extracts due to its ability to separate the most crucial cannabis compounds (namely THC and CBD), regardless of cannabis’ low resolution. 

Normal phase and reverse-phase flash chromatography methods are available, and your purification goals will help decide which method is best to be used. The difference between the two methods lies in the column type and solvents used. For normal mode flash chromatography, a silica-filled column and non-polar solvents are utilized whereas reversed-phase flash chromatography uses a waxy, bonded silica column with polar solvents such as water or ethanol. 

Normal phase flash chromatography is better suited to the separation of cannabis extracts that contain cannabinoids that have a greater polarity in their compounds, while the opposite is true for reversed-phase. 

Other Methods Of Cannabis Extraction Purification

There are other methods that can also be utilized to purify cannabis extracts, such as high-performance liquid chromatography and centrifugal partition chromatography. 

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) uses the same basic principle of purification as flash chromatography with the key differences being that HPLC uses a stainless-steel cylindrical column, while flash chromatography uses a plastic one, which is packed with thin homogenous particles, rather than the inhomogeneous particles of flash chromatography. 

Centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC), like the previous two methods of purification mentioned, follows the same principle. The difference with this type of cannabis extract purification is that there are two liquids, that are not capable of mixing, that are used–rather than a liquid and a solid. CPC needs less solvent for the same amount of recovery, or higher, which makes it especially useful in the purification of cannabis extracts for comprehensive or large-scale production of cannabis products.
