A Guide to Cannabis Extraction, Technology, and Equipment

Disclaimer: Medical decisions should not be made based on advertising. Consult a physician on the benefits and risks of particular hemp-derived products.

Cannabis extraction has come a long way in recent years, especially since the legalization, or relaxation of laws in some US states and Canada. There are over 100 cannabinoids that can be extracted from the raw Cannabis Sativa flower. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are the two most in demand for medical purposes.

Cannabinoids can be extracted in a number of ways, but the most popular and efficient is solvent based extraction. In this process, the plant material is exposed to a solvent (ethanol, in our lab) and agitated, which dissolves the cannabinoids. The ethanol-cannabis mixture then goes for further processing, depending on what needs to be extracted.

Extraction processes

We use the Cryo-Ethanol process to do our extraction, as it is faster, more efficient, and less damaging to the compounds within the distillate. The ethanol is eventually distilled out and re-used, making it a very economical extraction method.

If we were to remove the oil from the ethanol at this point, it would be known as “crude oil”. A full spectrum distillate, containing a large number of chemical compounds extracted from the plant. Further processing is needed to isolate specific cannabinoids or compounds.

Falling film distillation is used to separate two or more compounds by boiling point. The material is spread evenly, under pressure, into a thin film for efficient heat exchange. The ethanol can be easily evaporated out of this thin film, allowing it to be separated and stored for future extractions.

We use wiped film distillation for thermally sensitive compounds. It is a much gentler process where the crude material is wiped onto the inside of a heated tube allowing the evaporated CBD and Terpenes to be collected in separate condensers. The remaining materials with higher boiling points can be further processed by other means.

We also have an isolation reactor for refining CBD into a pure product with no detectable amounts of THC or any other compounds.

Our lab specializes in extraction of biological materials above 10 liters in volume. While we are branching out and processing other materials, we don’t want to lose expertise in cannabis/hemp extraction. We are also able to provide natural product extractions for use as Regulatory Starting Material (RSM).

Analysis

Our lab has access to top quality analysis tools and expertise, allowing us to verify and adjust our extraction at every step.

Flash Chromatography is available as an analytical tool to determine the efficiency of the distillation processes, but it is also used to further purify extracts and remediate unwanted components, such as THC, solvent left over from distillation, or terpenes.

This is accomplished by introducing the sample to the instrument along with a solvent. The compounds separate based on their polarity.

Reverse-Phase Chromatography is also possible using the same equipment.

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is also available at our lab.

HPLC is more accurate than flash chromatography and is used where an extremely fine product is needed. It differs by using high pressure and a smaller vessel than flash chromatography. Compounds are also separated out based on their polarity.

HPLC can be used to create either isolated or broad spectrum CBD distillates, which contain no detectable THC.

We have access to a mass spectrometer, allowing for very detailed analysis of samples. It can be used to determine quantities of relevant compounds, pesticides, metals, or other contaminants present in the samples.

Top Technology for Cannabis and Hemp Extraction in 2022

Medical decisions should not be made based on advertising. Consult a physician on the benefits and risks of particular hemp-derived products.

As an expert in the field of biological material extraction, Abundant Labs continuously develops and improves methods for cannabis and hemp extraction. One of Abundant Labs key areas of specialization is pharmaceutical research and development, particularly extractions for the use of API synthesis. The success of pure extraction relies on methods as much as on appropriate technologies and equipment. From centrifuge to distillation methods using ethanol and heat, Abundant Labs makes use of top-quality equipment to ensure reliability and uniformity of product.

Quality Tools for Quality Product

Super Cryo-Ethanol Extraction Method is the leading technology for cannabis and hemp extraction in 2022. The method is honed for accuracy by making use of thermal and chemical thresholds to isolate materials in addition to making use of pressure and solvents to purify materials. In the initial process, equipment such as a centrifuge is used to separate biological materials using low temperatures and ethanol. Then, heat and pressure are combined in the falling film and wiped film distillation equipment to separate the isolated materials. In the second phase of the process, the materials are further refined and isolated. In the CBD Isolation Reactor, solvents are used to extract the CBD with no trace of THC. Both Flash Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) use solvents for their refined extractions which focus on removing impurities. The end products undergo further purification to reach optimal standards, such as using vacuum ovens to remove moisture and gas and jacketed glass reactors to manipulate the viscosity of the product. A multi-step process allows for each stage of the process to be controlled and analyzed to ensure quality standards.

The Science of Quality

The equipment for extraction is only half of the technology that rules modern age cannabis and hemp extraction. In order to achieve high-quality cannabis/hemp products that meet the standards needed for pharmaceutical research and development, both methods and technologies to analyze the product are equally important. Abundant Labs has invested substantial resources into on-site testing and experts to oversee the process. By analyzing the product every step of the way, the parameters for the equipment being used can be adjusted accordingly. Processes can also be repeated, if need be.

Abundant Labs aims to bring exceptional professionalism to the industry and part of that objective is to ensure quality products by using modern and effective technologies. Particularly by using science to analyze purified products and continuously striving to stay ahead of the game. For a deeper dive into extraction technology, take a look at our free resources.

How Does Centrifuge Extraction Work?

DISCLAIMER: Medical decisions should not be made based on advertising. Consult a physician on the benefits and risks of particular hemp-derived products.

Centrifuges are an indispensable part of any well-stocked laboratory and impact several more sectors of industry than one might think. Centrifuges are sensitive pieces of equipment that use centrifugal force to separate liquids, gasses and all manner of other fluids based on density.

The centrifuge works by rotating at incredibly high speeds. The force generated can reach up to several thousand times that of Earth’s gravity. This has many unique applications that benefit several sectors including the food processing, mining, pharmaceutical, biofuel, wastewater treatment, and hemp extraction industry.

Centrifuge Extraction Experiment

To feel the force of centrifugation on the human body, grab a solid object the size of an orange and begin spinning, while keeping it at arm’s length. As you reach higher speeds, you’ll begin to feel the pull of that object on your arm.

Let go of the object and it will fly off in a straight line.

Having successfully performed the experiment above, you would have felt two forces at play. Both equal and opposite in nature. The first is a force generated by spinning; velocity and the second is the pull you feel on your arm, commonly known as centripetal force.

The latter is the key factor that determines how a centrifuge works as it directs an object towards a center of curvature.

Two Ways to Tango

At Abundant Labs we have honed our processes, specializing in extraction of biological materials that now extend further than just hemp. Still, there exists two ways in which industrial centrifuges can be used.

A solid bowl with no perforations, is known as a sedimentation centrifuge, a category that includes disc stack and decanter centrifuges. The centrifuge extraction process here is defined by the solid matter clinging to the wall or floor, while liquids are ejected through a designated passage. Industries where this type of extraction process is most effective range from wastewater treatment to oil drilling.

FIltration centrifuges take the form of a basket with perforations; a recurring theme, to allow liquids to pass though as it completes several rotations. This is closer to the experiment we performed earlier. Large pieces of solid matter too big to pass through the holes, will naturally be broken down as the centrifuge begins to speed up. This is a faster way to destroy the already weak hydrogen bonds allowing these particles to cling together.

Industries where this type of extraction process is most effective range from the chemical process of producing salt to the separation of crystallized sugars from your favorite brand of maple syrup.

While Abundant Labs relies on centrifuges for the natural product extraction for regulatory starting material, we also don’t want to lose expertise in cannabis/hemp extraction. As you have now learned about integral the centrifugal extraction process is to a wide range of industries, we look forward to experimenting with further developments in centrifuge extraction for use with API synthesis.
